Authie Bay is just 15 minutes from our campsite near Montreuil-sur-Mer, where you can see its seal colony visible every day, all year round. A fascinating nature outing for the whole family during your holiday on the Opal Coast, just a stone’s throw from the ramparts of Montreuil-sur-Mer. We would be happy to give you more tips…
Located between Berck-sur-Mer, Fort-Mahon, and very close to Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, this bay is home to one of the largest colonies of common seals and grey seals in France. At low tide, these marine mammals bask on the sandbanks, offering a rare and moving spectacle to observe with the family. A peaceful, educational, and 100% nature activity to add to your holiday itinerary. To discover all the treasures and species the ocean holds, visit Europe’s largest aquarium: Nausicaá, just a few kilometers away.
Hidden Gem of the Opal Coast
Authie Bay is a remarkable natural site, classified and protected for its unique biodiversity. It offers a mosaic of environments – dunes, mudflats, salt meadows – which constitute a refuge for exceptional wildlife. Besides seals, a multitude of seabirds, migratory birds, and waders can be observed there. This small wild paradise can be explored gently, respecting its fragile balance. By walking its trails, you will understand why this bay is one of the jewels of the Opal Coast, just like the splendid Somme Bay.
How to see the seals?
To observe the seals safely, go at low tide from the northern esplanade of Berck-sur-Mer. A marked trail leads you to the observation areas. It’s ideal to bring binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens. Guided tours with naturalist guides are also offered to learn more about their behavior and habitat. Be careful to always keep a distance of at least 300 meters so as not to disturb them. A great lesson in respect for nature to experience with the family!
